Smart Mobility Report: Presented the 2022 Edition

Enel X Way, a partner of the Polytechnic University of Milan, through the Smart Mobility Report, analyzes current trends and development prospects for decarbonization.
Enel X Way is a partner of the Polytechnic University of Milan for the preparation of the Smart Mobility Report, the annual report elaborated by the Energy & Strategy team of the university institute, now in its fifth edition in 2022. The objective of the document is to analyze the current state and macro-trends of mobility at the national and international levels, providing data and market perspectives in anticipation of a complete decarbonization of the sector: already in 2021, electric vehicles (BEVs and PHEVs) accounted for 8.3% of global registrations, with about 6.75 million electric cars and light commercial vehicles registered. In the first half of 2022, there was a higher growth in globally registered electric vehicles compared to the same period last year.

The market

In light of this trend, the report's over 400 pages cover crucial themes for the evolution of the e-mobility market. The analysis starts with the global impact of transportation on greenhouse gas emissions and the initiatives of European and Italian institutions regarding decarbonization (chapter 1), then reviews the global market for alternative fuel vehicles and the current spread of shared vehicles (x-sharing) in Italy (chapter 2).

Charging Stations

An in-depth analysis of the spread of public charging infrastructure worldwide, in Europe, and in Italy is naturally included, with an additional focus on the characteristics of available charging points in the Old Continent, especially on the Peninsula, as well as an analysis of home charging solutions (chapter 3).

E-mobility in Italy

The document then dwells on the integration of electric mobility with smart grids (chapter 5), taking into consideration intelligent, one-way (V1G) and two-way (V2G, or "vehicle-to-grid") charging systems, fundamental for network stability. The last three chapters present an extensive mapping of the competitive strategies and business models adopted by the players in the energy supply chain in the last two years (chap. 7), the "voice of the customer", i.e. the perspective of the owners and potential buyers of electric vehicles (chap. 8), but also the development scenarios up to 2030 of the smart mobility market in Italy and the related impacts in terms of reduction of CO2 emissions (chap. 9).
